canyoning
Upper South Bowens Creek Canyon has it all — narrow slots, short swims, ‘fun’ scrambles, and abseils. We’ll follow the ridge down to drop into the creek, warming up with some mild canyon before things get properly stunning. Expect deep, twisting constrictions, lush coachwood forests, and a mix of wading, sliding, and scrambling over boulders.
The exit? A classic climb, scramble and up to a fire trail.
This is a reschedule of a cancelled trip from a few weeks ago, but a few spots have opened up.
Requirements:
- You must have completed Abseil Skills 1 (AS1) to join this trip.
- You must be able to swim 100m unassisted.
- You must be fit enough for an 7-10hr day carrying a pack.
What to bring (besides your sense of adventure):
- Swimmers for under your wetsuit
- Old shorts or boardies (because canyoning is tough on neoprene)
- Lightweight rain jacket (extra warmth = extra fun)
- Closed grippy shoes (Volleys, sneakers — NO hiking boots!)
- Lunch, snacks, and 2L of water
- Change of clothes and a towel (unless you like that “damp all the way home” lifestyle)
- Sun protection
What we need from you:
Tell us what you’ve done outdoors recently, or what you want to get up to this year. Bonus points if you tell us whether water is wet (we’re taking a poll).
We’ll need to carpool, so those with a car will be preferred.
A spreadsheet to properly organise gear will be sent out next week. Please put what size wetsuit you’ll need below.
