caving

Nat and I will be running a trip to Bungonia for those who are interested in coming along for some caving! While not the most picturesque environment, Bungonia offers a lot of opportunities for ropework and a more “sporty” caving experience than most other locations across NSW. This will be a joint trip with the Sydney Speleological Society (SSS), however it is not a requirement to be a part of SSS to join this trip.

We will be camping at the Bungonia Campground, which is located very close to the caving area and offers hot showers, a kitchen and flushing toilets for a fairly modest price. Attendees will need to book in and pay for their own campsite.

The plan over the weekend will be to do a few different caves. For those who are more experienced with ropework, we will be attempting to do Acoustic Pot or Argyle Cave. We will also have other options available for those without rope experience, possibly College Cave or Higgins Hole. The exact caves we do may change on the day, so this is an indication only at the moment.

If you have never been caving before, you’re more than welcome to come along on this trip. There are a couple of caves in Bungonia that are ideal as a “first exposure” to caving that do not have any excessive scrambling or tight spaces to go through, and if you decide that caving isn’t for you, there are other walking tracks in the area that weave through the forest and nearby canyon, as well as koala spotting.

When registering for the trip, please note if you have had any caving experience in the last 12 months. I’ll be looking to have a balance of experienced and new cavers on the trip, so detailing this will help me sort numbers. No mention of caving experience will mean you go to the bottom of the list for being accepted.
