Hello Everyone,

We have received a number of requests for a platform for members to easily communicate with each other and also easily reach trip leaders and committee members in a less formal manner than is currently offered. Our solution to this has been to create a club discord community. We hope that by making it easier to communicate within the club we can promote a greater sense of community, making it easier to connect with like-minded individuals.

Creating an account is very simple and doesn’t require forming a profile like Instagram or Facebook.

For those who don’t need convincing here is the link to join our community:

Otherwise, here is my pitch:

Some people may wonder why we need another form of communication when we currently use…

  • the website
  • Facebook/Instagram
  • mailing lists
  • trip postings
  • emails

The common theme with these is that they either tend to be too formal for most situations (email or Facebook posts) or only work between an individual and the club (directly messaging our social media or replying to trip postings).

For those who don’t know, discord is a platform that allows members to send messages through different channels so that topics can be separated. We chose Discord over other messaging systems as it has a wide range of moderation and integration tools that make it easy to look after from a committee perspective.

So, what will discord be used for?

Discord:

– messaging between club members to ask questions
– to organise informal trips such as heading to the climbing gym or various other casual meetups (please note any trip run by the club will be posted on the website)
– asking for opinions or advice about gear
– get or give ideas or reviews for upcoming trips

Facebook and Instagram:
– posting photos from club trips
– announcements about upcoming events

Website:
– official club trips, policies and procedures

Email chain:

-formal communication to all club members (or trip leaders)

For those who still aren’t convinced, we will still continue to communicate through the standard channels. We do hope you consider giving this new platform a go. A lot of thought and discussion has gone into it and we truly believe it will greatly improve the way we communicate as a club. We figured it was worth the experiment.

If you have any more questions, please let me know (maybe even try reaching out on Discord;))

Regards,

Sean
