Rogaining[1] – The Sport of Thought – is back for 2023!

This first event is a ‘minigaine’ a pint sized version of the usual at only 3 hours long. It’s the perfect way to give the sport a try! It’s conveniently located in the southern beach suburbs of Sydney, so it’s easy to get to as well.

From the Website:
“The 2023 Minigaine will be held on Sunday February 26th and kicks off in Sydney’s picturesque seaside suburbs of Malabar and La Perouse. The course is suitable for a wide range of abilities, featuring a perfect mix of national parklands and urban area.

Teams will cover large portions of the famous Maroubra to La Perouse walk, combining the Malabar Headland, Cape Banks and Henry Head Walking tracks.

With epic sandstone cliffs, a couple of beautiful national parks, wartime fortifications, plus hidden beaches and bays, there is plenty to enjoy during the race.”

This event is unusual in that you can enter it solo rather than the usual team of 2-5. A number of us want to do that because it’s the only event this year where that’s the case. But never fear, if you’re new to the sport or new to navigation you are absolutely welcome to run as a team. Let us know your preference (solo or team) in the sign-up and we’ll do our best to make up some compatible teams. If you let us know what kind of pace you want to take it (some like to stroll! some like to run!) that helps a lot too.

The cost is $40 for adults, $30 for concession. If you’re going solo or know your team mates sign up here: https://nswrogaining.org/minigaine-2023/. There’s more info there about the event, and the sport as well.

[1] Rogaine? What even is that? It’s the sport of long distance cross-country navigation. You get a map and compass and you need to find as many ‘controls’ marked on the map as possible. It’s run in teams of 2-5 and you can only use the map, your compass and your wits. GPS and google maps are right out!

There will hopefully be a navigation skills session beforehand so sign up for that if you need some pointers.
