kayaking leader training skills workshop

Following on from the Paddle Skills 1 day run earlier this year, Salomé & I are proud to present Paddle Skills 2 (ta da!)

We’ll spend two days on a grade 2 river developing our whitewater skills. Which river? It depends. We’ll keep an eye on river levels in the lead up, but count on a minimum 4 hour drive. Candidates include the Murrumbidgee, Cotter and Snowy Rivers.

In the lead up we’ll be running two sessions in Sydney. You have to attend both of these to attend the weekend. Here’s the plan:

Theory Night @ 1st North Sydney Scout Hall
1900-2130, 17 Oct
– Gear familiarisation
– Hydrodynamics
– Rescues
– Throw bags
– Safety management

Paddle night @ Berrys Bay (TBC)
1900-2130, 24 Oct
– Boat familiarisation
– Wet exits
– Rescues
– Rolling intro

Paddle Weekend (Grade 2 river)
– Throw bagging
– Aggressive/defensive swimming
– River features
– Breaking in/out
– Ferry gliding
– Active blade
– Picking a route
– WORMS

You’ll need a kayak, paddle, helmet, life jacket and spray deck. You can rent these from 1st North Sydney Scouts for $100 for the weekend. We’ll transport them for you as well.

In addition, you’ll need a spray jacket, thermal underwear, dry bag (can borrow from us) and enclosed footwear to wear in the water. We’ll be camping both nights (byo everything).

Stu can cook up a group dinner if there’s interest.

You need to be a good swimmer: 200 meter swim (in under 5min), floating on the back for two minutes, five minutes of non-stop treading water

Preference will be given to those who have completed the Paddle Skills 1 day. If you haven’t, then please outline relevant paddling experience, including swimming ability.
