G’day all,
Sam Hassan, Susan, and I are hunting pagodas in Newnes Plateau. We’ll be using the 2021 Paddy Pallin map and a regular topo. There are a lot of trails in the area, but we’re aiming to do a bit of exploring and getting off track. This is an iconic bit of country– Newnes is a playground for 4WD, mountain biking, climbing, and canyoning, so some of the rock formations and views are quite dramatic.
Who is this for: Novice hikers who are looking to get comfortable in off track environments.
Requirements: Enough fitness to handle 10km walking and 600m ascent/descent. Should be comfortable with spiderwebs, prickly stuff, uneven surfaces, and some mild scrambling.
Gear: Proper backpack, closed shoes, container for 2L water, rudimentary First Aid (Snake bandage and thermal blanket).
Optional: Compass, if you’re keen to do some nav practice.
