Have you ever wanted to extend your hike beyond a single day but weren’t sure where to start? Or just want to move a bit beyond your comfort zone before committing to larger trips over the holiday season? Zen and I will be running an introductory overnight hike in the Royal National Park, staying at the Uloola Falls campground.
Day 1 will be meeting at Heathcote Station, and from there we’ll walk down towards the stunning Karloo Pools. After having a bit to eat and enjoying the pools, we’ll continue on towards the Uloola Falls and the campground. The total distance for the day will be around 5-6km, along mostly well maintained hiking trail.
Uloola Falls campground is located near the falls, and is accessible through walking only. The campsite has a long-drop toilet, however there is no water available in the area, only what you bring with you or filter on-site. We’ll set up our equipment and settle down for the night, spending time at the falls nearby before heading off to bed.
Day 2 presents two options, depending on how people are feeling after the first day. Option 1 is to return the same way we came, via the Karloo Pools and up the trail, possibly exploring slightly further down the river if people are interested. Option 2 if people are not as enthused about the hike out is to exit via the Uloola Fire Trail to Waterfall station. Both options are around 5km however will likely be a less vertically intense walk via the fire trail.
Both Heathcote and Waterfall are accessible via the T4 rail line, and our departure on Saturday will take into consideration those who are coming via public transport. The club will be able to provide some equipment, please put down in the trip comments if you need any of the following:
– Bag (minimum 50L)
– Sleeping bag
– Tent
– Sleeping mat
Accepted attendees will need to pay their own campground fees for the night ($12.50) via the NPWS website prior to the trip.
A full recommended packing list and itinerary will be sent out once attendees are confirmed. Please include any hiking experience, and examples of some recent hikes that you’ve done in the comments.
