G’day,
Rogaining is an incredibly accessible navigation event, especially Minigaines or Metrogaines — from the location, to the terrain, to the duration. Nonetheless, many novice navigators find turning up to these events completely fresh a bit intimidating. I’m running a Mini-Nav-Skills as a quick intro for the uninitiated using last year’s Lane Cove Rivergaine course.
This is not a full “Navigation Skills” course (we’d aim to run one at a later date); this is a quick half-day (3-4hour) workshop that gets you some of the basics of:
- map reading
- compass use
- how rogaines work
- equipment and nutrition
- teamwork
- how to plan your course
Keep an eye out for the full day course when it stops being hot and muggy and when other leaders aren’t hectically escorting new club members over cliff edges.

P.S. 2024 Rogaining kicks off with the Minigaine in Newport (the now booked out Sunday event). Entries close tonight, but if you’re quick to shell out $28, there’s often still a chance to get in after entries close.
