canyoning

As the season began with Butterbox, so it ends with this canyon, drawing a perfect full stop to this summer。

As Autumn encroaches, drop bears are preparing to hibernate, and water temperature would drop significantly in the mountains. The freezing cold invades deep into the skin and chill into the bones, making you want to curl into a ball. As water and wind, loyal to the second law of thermodynamics, are ruthlessly stripping warmth from your body, so is the cold reaching deep into your mind silently scratching your worst nightmare onto the back of your skull. At this moment, would you succumb and fall to your knees or thrive and become imbued with love for the canyon like I did?

Because of its inherent technical abseils and climb-out, Butterbox or Mt Hay canyon is one of the hardest canyon in the blueys. Without the summery warmth, it’s an excellent test to your mind and body. Of course, like any other club trips, please assess the risks and reward yourself before you sign up the trip, especially when hypothermia is very common in canyons.

You must have done a few canyons by now, be comfortable with heights, jumps into water, abseiling and extended swims with packs and wetsuits.

Prerequisites: Self-rescue or equivalent
