skills workshop

Howdy Folks,

Did you know that Rope rescue is such an important skill that even a member British Monarchy acquired it?

New trip leaders and advanced participants will be able to learn and practice Vertical Rope Rescue Skills on real 20m cliffs.

  1. Pass a knot while mid-abseil.
  2. Tandem abseil from the top of a cliff
  3. Pick off a casualty from mid-abseil and tandem abseil down to the bottom.
  4. Build and operate an assisted hoist.
  5. Build and operate an unassisted hoist (the Z-hoist or 3:1 hoist). Prepare to sweat!

Prerequisites:

  • Have completed Abseil skills 1 and 2.
  • Be able to rig natural or bolted anchors and rope for abseiling.
  • Self-belay with friction knots.
  • Prusik up and down the rope using prusiks or mechanical ascenders.
  • Know how to tie and apply all foundational knots and hitches.
  • Know how to tie off on multiple descenders mid-abseil.

We will have an opportunity for an evening practice session at North Sydney Scout on the 15th of October to refresh all the above prerequisite knowledge. The trip has already been posted, sign-up for that trip also.

What to bring:

  1. Your fancy and latest rescue gear, such as VT prusiks, Mechanical Ascenders, Rope Grabs, and Rescue kits.
  2. Harness/safety lanyard/Helmet
  3. Belay devices
  4. Comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes
  5. Sun protection
  6. Food and Water for the day.

The club will provide:

  • Ropes, slings, webbing, anchor building equipment.
  • Should you require it: Harness/helmets/belay devices/some rescue kits/prusiks/locking carabiners/ascenders

Camping is available at nearby Mt York should you wish to stay over on Saturday night.

Looking forward to a fun weekend of skills and practice.
