The long-awaited Abseil Skills 2 has returned, and with a facelift! Join Zen and I as we aim to cover the basic skills required to assist in running an abseiling or canyoning trip. This will be run as a weekend trip where we will cover skills and practise on the first day at Mitchells Ridge, near Blackheath. Then on the Sunday we will head out and tackle Malatia Point where you will demonstrate your skills in the wild.
Prerequisites:
– Must be competent in self-rescue and self-belaying (see self-rescue skills notes)
– AS1
– Completed at least 3 abseiling/canyoning trips with the club
– Preference will be given to trip leaders looking to upskill.
If you do not currently have self-rescue skills you can sign up anyway, but you will need to attend the rope skills night on Tuesday the 17th beforehand. It covers crucial skills that we will build upon during this course. If this applies to you, please mention it in your signup information.
What we will cover:
– Discussion of the role of the anchor manager
– Discussion of hazards and other considerations, and how to manage them.
– Setting up and operating releasable abseils
– Setting up non-releasable abseils
– Belaying from above
– Methods for joining ropes
– Passing knots while lowering
– Assessing and replacing anchors
We’ll also try to cover a few tips and tricks for moving efficiently if we have time.
In the signup information please list the abseil/canyon trips you have done and confirm that you are available for the entire weekend.
See you there!
