canoeing kayaking leader training skills workshop

Hey all,

I’ve been working with USyd Canoe Club to support regular paddling sessions at UNSW Pool. The focus is on learning how to roll — a perishable self-rescue skill (many are) valuable in whitewater contexts. It needs a lot of practice, and it’s hard to find space to do so without ingesting a bunch of salt or lake water for your troubles. Pools are great for this!

When you sign up, please tell me: if you’ve ever tried or succeeded at rolling (or not), and if you have access to a small boat with skirt. The scout boats are considered on the “large” size as an FYI, even if we can borrow them.

We’ve prebooked 4 spots at $15pp (boats and gear situation TBD), and they’ll occur on Saturdays 1630-1830. Other clubs and community members will also likely attend, from their club, UNSWOC, etc. This session in particular is a sort of trial to see if we have enough interest and what sort of logistical issues arise. For now, I’ll post as we go, but in the future, we may manage a combined mailing list with USCC.

Because space is limited, priority goes to those with a record of reliable attendance and known swimming/paddling experience. If you’ve not been on a trip with me recently, list your experience in signup and I’ll give you a ring.

Adam (USCC) has put together a nice doco of what to expect: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_zpLvPAnFWMP66LHaFT9Og6FBhf4lTtqNOfP3r6B0Uo/edit?tab=t.0

The vibe I get is it’s very very similar to what you have on our rope nights. Turn up with an idea of where your skill level is, and you’ll be matched to experienced people that are happy to guide and mentor.

Hope to see you in the water. My sinuses are already ringing….
