Hey all,
I’ve been working with UNSWOC and USyd Canoe Club to support regular paddling sessions at UNSW Pool. The focus is on learning how to roll — a perishable self-rescue skill (many are). It needs a lot of practice, and it’s hard to find space to do so without ingesting a bunch of salt or lake water for your troubles. Pools are great for this!
The sessions are alternating fortnightly between Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The current listed dates are below:
- Aug 26th, Tue
- Sep 10th, Wed
- Sep 23rd, Tue
- Oct 8, Wed
- Oct 21, Tue
The pattern may continue after that, or merge into Canoe Polo Practice.
When you sign up, please tell me:
- which dates you’re signing up for
- if you’ve ever tried or succeeded at rolling (or not)
- if you have access to a small boat with skirt.
We’ve prebooked 4 spots on Tuesdays, 2 on Wednesdays, and you’ll need to pay $15. Other clubs and community members will attend, from their club, UNSWOC, etc.
Because space and gear is limited, priority goes to those with a record of reliable attendance and known swimming/paddling experience. If you’ve not been on a trip with me recently, list your experience in signup and I’ll give you a ring.
Adam (USCC) has put together a nice doco of what to expect: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_zpLvPAnFWMP66LHaFT9Og6FBhf4lTtqNOfP3r6B0Uo/edit?tab=t.0
The vibe I get is it’s very very similar to what you have on our rope nights. Turn up with an idea of where your skill level is, and you’ll be matched to experienced people that are happy to guide and mentor.
Hope to see you in the water. My sinuses are already ringing….
