Salome and I are running a Paddle Skills 2 course on 20-22 March (heading down Friday evening). You must have successfully completed the Paddle Skills 1 course to attend (next one is 1st March).

Paddle Skills 2 introduces you to kayaking on grade 2+ whitewater, most likely on the Murrumbidgee River (around 5 hours drive from Sydney), but other options include the Cotter and Snowy Rivers. We’ll make the call based on river levels in the lead up to the weekend. If you want to get a feel for how the weekend will run, there’s a video from the last course here.

Skills Covered:

– Throw bagging
– Aggressive/defensive swimming
– River features
– Breaking in/out
– Ferry gliding
– Active blade
– Picking a route (WORMS)

You’ll need a kayak, paddle, helmet, life jacket and spray deck. You can rent these for $120 for the weekend, which includes trailer towing for them.

In addition, you’ll need a spray jacket (cag or raincoat), thermal underwear, dry bag (can borrow from us) and enclosed footwear with grippy rubber to wear in the water. We’ll be camping both nights (BYO everything, but feel free to borrow camping gear from the Club).

You need to be a good swimmer i.e. 200 meter swim (in under 5min), floating on the back for two minutes, five minutes of non-stop treading water.

When signing up, specify:

  • your weight and height (this helps with boat availability);
  • whether you need to rent a boat/deck/helmet/PFD ($120 for 2 days)

Paddle Skills 1 is a pre-requisite for attending unless you are able to demonstrate equivalent paddling experience, including swimming ability when signing up.

We can cook up a group dinner if there’s interest.
