What the hell is Ski-O?
Welcome to the (very small) world of Ski Orienteering. If you like rogaining or orienteering *and* skiing, but not so much the $240 lift ticket prices, then you’ll love Ski-O. So why not enter the ACT & NSW Ski-O Championships (and also the only Ski-O event on the calendar)?
(Surprisingly) This is also suited to people who:
[ ] Never skied before
[ ] Never used a compass
The event is on the Sunday. That gives us a day to get everyone’s XC ski and nav skills up to championship standards on the Perisher XC loops and we’ll have a practice night in Sydney two weeks beforehand.
You will need to have appropriate gear, including a warm sleeping bag (at least -5 deg C rating), sleeping mat, shell pants/jacket, goggles, gloves and day pack. We’ll talk about some of this at the practice night.
Expect to pay around $150 for shared petrol, camping fees and ski rental. Event costs are on top of that. Happy to do shared food if that’s of interest.
Rough Plan:
7 Aug: Drive to Cooma, rent skis, camp at Island Bend (near Guthega)
8 Aug: Learn to XC ski on the Perisher Loops. Camp at Island Band or similar.
9 Aug: Ski-O Event, return skis, drive home
Priority will be given to people who can bring a car and know how to keep warm in the snow. Please make a note about this when you book!
