Hi all,
After the success of the inaugural Interclub Story Night in April, we’ll be hosting another one on the 28th of October (which happens to be exactly six months after the last one). This time, we’re planning to book the back room of the Forest Lodge Hotel, but we’re keeping a lecture theatre at UTS as a backup option in case that falls through.
I’ll post the official Interclub Story Night event in a couple weeks, but for now I’m just looking for people who are interested in presenting.
Hold on, what is this?
In case you weren’t there last time, the Interclub Story Night is a fun social event between major outdoor clubs from UTS, USYD, UNSW, and Newcastle Uni. We gather over free or subsidised food and drinks (TBD) and listen to members of our clubs tell cool stories about the adventures they’ve been on recently. Last time, the presentations ranged from hiking in Nepal to Canyoning in Taiwan, and many more in-between.
What’s different this time?
Last time, most of the stories were about major overseas adventures. While these were awesome, shorter stories about local trips can also be great fun, so we’re encouraging presentations of both types this time. Also, we’ll be welcoming a guest speaker, Brendon Flannagan (an ex-president of our club and a key member of the Australian School of Mountaineering), to give a presentation about the journey of writing his new book, The Australian Climbing Handbook.
So, the night will follow this (very) rough structure:
- 5:30pm doors open.
- 6:00pm short stories about local trips start.
- 6:45pm Brendon’s presentation.
- 7:00pm food and chat break.
- 7:30pm longer stories about bigger adventures.
- 8:30pm wrap up the presentations, people are welcome to sit around and socialise a bit longer.

If you’ve read this far, then yes.
What should be in my presentation?
Every presenter should bring a slide deck to go along with their presentation. People love tension, drama, funny moments, unique experiences, and spectacular photos. But make it your own, and be creative! If you were on this adventure with a friend, you’re more than welcome to present together. As a rough guide, short stories (first half of the night) should be around 5-10 minutes, and the longer stories (second half) around 10-15.

Note: We’ll also need an MC. We had a great MC from SUBW last time, but in case we can’t get her back, sign up to express your interest!
