The Adventure
Get ready to pack your dry bags and hit the water! Salomé and I are heading down to the stunning Kangaroo River for a full weekend of flatwater canoeing, river camping, and epic wilderness vibes.
Canoe Hire & Gear Inclusions
We will be hiring canoes through Valley Outdoors. The exact fee is TBD pending group booking negotiation, but standard multi-day rates are roughly $180–$190 per 2-seater canoe per day (which works out to approx. $180–$190 per person for the entire weekend hire when split between two paddlers). Participants will be expected to cover their portion of the final hire cost.
What Valley Outdoors Provides with Each Hire:
- High-quality touring canoes
- Paddles & PFDs (Life Jackets)
- 1x 60L Waterproof Barrel / Dry Bag per person
- Waterproof river map
- On-site delivery and pickup at Beehive Point
- Safety & paddling briefing before launching
What You Need
Experience & Fitness:
- Remote overnight camping experience (you must be confident pitching camp, cooking in the bush, and managing your own supplies).
- Confident swimmer (ability to swim at least 50m unassisted).
- Decent fitness for continuous flatwater paddling over two days.
Personal & Camping Gear (*can be borrowed from the UTSOAC gear store):
- Tent / Shelter *
- Sleeping Bag & Sleeping Mat (must have own liner) *
- Stove and cooking kit *
- Spare dry bags / heavy-duty waterproof liners (essential to protect sleeping bags, warm clothes, and electronics inside barrels/canoes)
- All meals & snacks for Saturday (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) & Sunday (Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks)
- Water treatment (filter/tablets) OR fresh water storage capacity (assume 2L /day)
- Headlamp / Torch

- Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
- Shoes that can get wet
- Spare set of clothes
Optional:
- BYO personal canoe/kayak (must have enough dry storage space for overnight camp gear and a verified transportation method like roof racks).
Sign Up Questions:
- Transport: Do you have a car/roof racks, and will you be driving down Friday night or taking the day off to explore Kangaroo Valley?
- Paddling Experience: Tell us about your previous kayaking/canoeing experience.
- Camping Experience: Tell us about your overnight remote camping experience (e.g., multi-day hikes, canoe trips, or remote bush camping).
- Swimming Ability: Can you swim at least 50m unassisted in open water?
- Gear Check:
• Do you need a spot in a Valley Outdoors hire canoe, or are you bringing your own craft?
• Do you need to borrow any camping gear from the UTSOAC store (e.g., tent, mat, sleeping bag, stove, spare dry bags)? - Dietary: Do you have any dietary requirements, medical conditions or anything else we should know about?
