Unfortunately we can no longer run this on the planned date. New dates are TBC

G’day Folks,

Zen and I are planning a weekend up on the Newnes Plateau to descend some very special canyons.

What makes these canyons so special you ask?

Well… they belong to an increasingly rare (soon to be non-existent) subset of canyon.

These are some of the only remaining canyons in the Greater Blue Mountains, that Zen Marcos hasn’t descended and that can be done as day trips!

Saturday, we’ll descend Breakfast Creek. Depending on how we’re going for time, we may choose to reverse Rocky Creek on the way out. Breakfast Creek sounds like a short but pretty canyon with a few abseils up to 30m. Not many swims, but Rocky Creek will make up for that.  We’ll return to the cars and camp somewhere in the area Saturday night.

Sunday, we’re looking at doing Sheep Dip Canyon. This is another short canyon in the upper reaches of Rocky Creek. It sounds like a cruisy little slot with a bunch of jumps and slides.

Note, that I haven’t done these canyons either, so we’re going to be exploring!

Pre-requisites

  • Completed abseil skills 1
  • Previous hiking experience
  • Comfortable with a bit of bushbashing. These aren’t frequently done canyons. There won’t be any trails leading to them. It’s likely that we’ll spend more time bushbashing/creek bashing into them, than we will spend in the canyons.
  • Comfortable with some scrambling and exposure
  • Decent fitness for a full day of hiking with some steep hills
  • Can swim

Let us know in the sign up info

  • Your hiking/canyoning/abseiling experience, and if any of it has been off-track
  • If you can bring a car, and are happy driving it on rough-ish but still 2wd friendly dirt roads
  • If you can only make it for one of the days, feel free to still sign up as long as you have your own transport. It is a long drive for a day trip though. We will prioritise people who can stay for both days.

See ya there
