abseiling
Heya!
In just a couple of short months, everyone in the club with good taste in sport will emerge from their cocoons and dive headfirst into a canyon. And hopefully all you newbies are eager to give it a shot! A vital prerequisite, however, is knowing how to abseil.
That’s what Abseil Skills 1 is for. In this course, we teach you the knowledge and skills you need in order to safely abseil outdoors, no experience required! You will learn how to:
⁃ Maintain personal safety on and around cliffs
⁃ Identify and use abseiling equipment
⁃ Prepare for an abseil
⁃ Conduct pre-abseil safety checks
⁃ Conduct abseil communication between the top and bottom of cliffs
⁃ Perform a variety of abseils
⁃ Negotiate common abseil hazards
⁃ Perform fireman belays
WHEN AND WHERE
– We will meet at the Burrows Park changerooms at 1:00pm on Saturday the 2nd of August.
– The 339 bus from Central gets you straight there.
– Walk through the sports field to the changerooms. We will meet here and walk over to the cliffs together when we’re ready.
WHAT TO BRING
– Closed, grippy shoes
– Sun protection
– Snacks
– Plenty of water
– Wind-resistant clothing
– Hair ties/a way to tie long hair back (if applicable)
The club will provide rope, harnesses, helmets and all other safety equipment (but feel free to bring your own).
In the ‘experience and skills’ box, please state any experience you have with roped activities (none is fine). Also, whether or not you like the beach, and why (just to make sure you’ve read this far – it will increase your chances of getting accepted).
Hope to see you there!
