canyoning leader training skills workshop

Hi everyone,

We will be running a pair of canyoning rescue skills scenario trips on the 22nd and 23rd of March, putting into practice many of the various skills that people have picked up across training provided within the club and through external opportunities. These sessions are focused on applying skills that have already been taught and using those within a canyon to get a team through.

The general format for the trip will be:
– Start early in the morning and walk to the starting point of the canyon
– At various points in the canyon, a trip leader and seconder will be nominated, and presented with a problem (such as a abseiler with a sprained wrist who needs to be taken down and abseil). They will then use their existing knowledge and equipment to lead and navigate the group through the problem
– After each problem, we will collectively discuss what went well, what didn’t, and what can be improved in future. These will then be collated into a single trip report that will be posted for the club, and used to help improve training in future.

The plan is to get through at least 3 or 4 of these problems through the process of going through the canyon, pending available time. Each day will be limited to 6 participants, including trip leaders. In order to get as many people through as possible, we will only be accepting people for one trip for the weekend.

*** This trip is intended as a way of using existing skills, not as a training session ***
We expect that anyone who is coming on this trip has sufficient knowledge of abseiling, anchor building, rope rescue and first-aid skills to be able to participate and contribute to any scenario they are nominated to lead, as well as confidence that they can use these skills without assistance or oversight.
