It’s been a long time in the making, but the club has finally acquired four shiny new Kokopelli Packrafts!!!

Zen and I will be taking these out for an inaugural (I think) overnight trip down a remote and rugged stretch of the Colo River.
You should come join us.

Starting Point: Canoe Creek
Ending Point: TBC… either Bob Turners Track or Upper Colo Bridge

Expect long pools in a scenic gorge with sandy beaches, interspersed with Grade 3 rapids.
Note this trip is highly dependant on water levels. Too high or too low and we’ll need to cancel.

To be considered for this trip you must:
– Be comfortable with exposed scrambling. The descent to the Colo is steep… and we’ll need to do it with the usual overnight hiking gear + an extra 10kg of paddling gear.
– Have previous kayaking experience. Days will be upwards of 20km of paddling.
– Have previous overnight hiking experience. There are no established campsites here, we’ll be wild camping, you’ll need to be self-sufficient in this regard.
– Can comfortably swim 50m freestyle.
– Be available for the whole weekend. We’ll be leaving Sydney at stupid o’clock Saturday morning and getting back late on Sunday.

Bonus points if:
– You have your own packraft. The club only has 4 rafts which limits how many people can join the trip. If you are taking your own raft it needs to be quality. The Colo River gorge is deep and commiting. You don’t want to find yourself scrub bashing along the riverbank for 20km to the next exit point when your $20 kmart raft springs a leak.
– You have your own PFD. It needs to fit properly and be suitable for kayaking. The club apparently has some but I haven’t personally seen them, and have been told that they’re “super crap”, so not sure how suitable they will be for this particular trip?
– Have a 4WD or AWD with a bit of clearance. This will be handy for the car shuffle.

Let us know your experience in the sign up info, and if you can bring a car

Catch you out there!
