All Day
canyoning
Hi all,
Storytime: On the 9th of November, 2022, a major landslip resulted in the closure of the Wolgan Road, the only road leading into Newnes. Additionally, it seems like the road might be closed for some years yet. Which is unfortunate because there are some nice canyons around there. So, Ollie and I thought – why wait?
On the King’s Birthday long weekend (5th to 7th of October), Ollie and I will be walking into Newnes from Glen Davis over the pipeline track. We’re going to hike in with all of our canyoning and camping gear, and set up a basecamp at Newnes (maybe around the industrial ruins if we can find a spot, because Newnes Campsite is a little far). We’ll aim to do three canyons, one each day. We’ll probably do Starlight Canyon on the 6th, but the other two are still undecided – there are a lot of options. I’ll set up a group chat to discuss this.
This is an intermediate trip. You should be fit enough for the 600m elevation gain on the walk-in, as well as three consecutive days of canyoning. You should also have done at least a couple of overnight/multiday hikes and at least one abseiling trip, preferably a canyon (not including AS1). Hence, you should have a good idea of what you need to pack (though feel free to ask questions to make sure). There will also be a fair bit of bush bashing and off-track navigation, so be prepared for that. We may or may not need wetsuits, depending on which canyons we plan to do. Hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Zen and Ollie
