G’day,

Rogaining is back for 2025. Warm up those moxy gaiters and compasses.

The first Rogaine of 2025 is at Kurnell and the adjacent Kamay Botany Bay National Park. This is the first Rogaine held in this location – the map does not overlap with previous Rogaines in Cronulla in 2017 and Caringbah in 1996.

Kurnell is one of Sydney’s most unique and isolated suburbs with only one road in. It is bordered by a beach to the north, Kamay NP to the east, wetlands to the west and an oil terminal to the south. There’s also the site of Captain Cooks’ first landing, a village of isolated beach shacks, and very low flying aircraft. It’s flat and easy to navigate and will have Rogainers off to a flying start – but make sure you don’t set off on a kamikaze mission!

Kamay NP is right next door and features heavily in the course. There is rainforest, coastal scrub, open rock faces, a lighthouse and sandstone cliffs dropping into the ocean. Look out for wallabies, birds, snakes and maybe some dolphins. There’s also a network of tracks which will let smart Rogainers compete with the young flyers. The course setter might also have found some sand dunes and stairs .

This is a 3 hour event for teams and solo Rogainers. Registration commences at 7:30am. The event starts at 9am and finishes at 12 noon. Prize giving is around 12.30pm. Snacks and drinks are provided at the end of the event and are included in the entry fee.

Our numbers are capped at 400, so don’t wait to enter. Don’t forget your cossies and a towel. ”

What is rogaining? It’s the sport of cross country navigation– you will have a map with controls plotted, and you have a time limit to collect as many points as you can. Events are normally done in teams of 2-5 people, and can last as long as 27hours. Mini-gaines kick off the start of the season, are usually shorter (this one is 3 hours), suburban, and can be done solo if you like. They’re perfect for people who are just looking to try the sport out.

This event is quite popular and will fill up fast, with a cap of 400. We’ll look to have teams organised and signed up by the end of January. Let me know when you sign up if you need to borrow a compass, and if you’d like a teammate, how you’d like to approach the event– want to be chill and smell the roses, or are your trail vest and energy gels at the ready for you to collect all the flags on the map?

Pub lunch afterwards because it’s also my birthday!
