Hi all,
Sunil and I (Zen) will be running a trip to Dalpura canyon on Sunday the 3rd of December for megafest. This is a short, relatively easy canyon with no abseils. It’s basically a hike through a crack in the ground (featuring water). So if you’ve been doing some hiking and want to dip your toes into the world of canyoning, then this is the trip for you.
You should have a decent level of fitness, be comfortable with scrambling, and have a high cold tolerance. Unfortunately, due to clashes with other canyons, the club won’t be able to provide any wetsuits for this trip. You should be fine without one, but if you get cold easily, you might need to sort out getting a wetsuit from elsewhere.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
– Water (2L minimum)
– Food (lunch + snacks)
– Sun protection
– A day pack you’re willing to get wet (though if you’re committed you can probably keep it dry)
– Shoes you’re willing to get wet (I’m probably going to bring 2 pairs – hiking boots for the walk in/out, and river shoes for the wade through the canyon. If you’re sticking to one pair, don’t bring waterproof hiking boots. They will fill up with water and make your life miserable)
– Non-cotton pants/shorts
– Dry bags (again, you can probably keep your bag dry. But if there are some electronics etc that you’re concerned about and you don’t have a dry bag, I can pop them in mine)
– Wetsuit (optional – see above)
– Dry pants and a jumper for the walk out (pop these in a dry bag or a big zip lock bag, just in case your pack gets a bit wet)
– Spare clothes and a towel for the car
– An emergency blanket (you can pick them up for $5 at any chemist)
WHEN AND WHERE?
⁃ Sunday the 3rd of December
⁃ The track is called Dalpura Canyon and Jinki Ridge. However, we’ll be doing it in reverse.
⁃ This trip is part of Megafest. So we’ll be leaving from Cathedral Reserve campground, and returning to Sydney afterwards.
⁃ We’ll leave at 10am at the latest. It’s a short canyon, so we’ll probably be done by 2-3pm.
⁃ We’ll park cars at the link below (there’s a little gravel patch on the side of the road where we could fit a few cars). It’s a 20 minute drive from the campsite.
