canyoning
Hi all,
It’s Megafest time! On Sunday the 8th of December, Sam and I will be leading a trip to Serendipity Canyon. This one is popular among guided groups and beginners as it offers the full experience – abseiling, swimming, canyon constrictions, beautiful scenery, and maybe even some glow worms! If you’ve done AS1 and are keen to try canyoning for the first time, or even if you’ve done a canyon or two and can’t wait to do more, this trip is for you.
THE PLAN:
– Most of us will already be camping at Cathedral Reserve Campground the night before (Saturday night), which is where we’ll be leaving from. If you’re missing out on Saturday, that’s ok too, just make sure to meet us at the campground in time on Sunday morning.
– On Sunday, we’ll get up in time to leave by 9:00 am (so don’t party too hard on Saturday night!).
– We’ll hopefully be out and back at the campsite around 5:00 pm, where we’ll debrief, pack up camp, and head back home.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
– Have good physical fitness (there’s a long, steep uphill walk to get back to the campsite after the canyon).
– Can swim unassisted.
– Have completed AS1.
GEAR:
Being prepared and having the right gear for a canyoning trip is very important. The club can provide specific abseiling and canyoning equipment that you’ll need for this trip (don’t worry about the ‘gear I need’ section, I’ll send out a spreadsheet to organise this closer to the date). On top of this, you will also have to bring:
– 2+ L of water.
– Lunch + high-energy snacks.
– Suncream.
– Hair ties/a way to tie long hair back in a bun (if applicable).
– Closed, grippy shoes that you are willing to get wet, dirty, and scuffed (waterproof hiking boots don’t work very well – they will fill up with water and act like buckets). If you don’t already have shoes that match this description, Volleys are a classic for people first getting into canyoning.
– Old shorts to wear over your wetsuit to protect it (if you’re borrowing a wetsuit from the club).
– A headtorch (in case something goes wrong and we have to walk out in the dark).
– Dry clothes for the walk out (optional, can be the clothes you walked in with, apart from undergarments).
In the signup description, please jot down your canyoning/abseiling experience. If that doesn’t extend past AS1, that’s fine! Put down your hiking experience instead. Hope to see you out there!
Cheers,
Zen & Sam H
