10am – Meet-Up @ Mt Gibraltar – Jellore Lookout – Location here

THE GOAL – The goal is to practice multi-pitch climbing with many belay transitions in a low stakes environment. Mt Gibraltar has long easy routes of up to 5 pitches, perfect for honing belay transitions.

The climbing is easy, the bolts are close together and the belays have good line of sight and communication between climbers

There are easy walking routes to retreat from a climb and the location is literally in the middle of the town of Bowral

BEFORE THE DAY

Go over the OAC multipitch skills notes
Recap on the things you learned at Mt Keira.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

Routes: What routes would be appropriate for me?
Approach: How do I find the routes?
Retreat: What are the retreat options if I get stuck

Pick three routes as your objectives. I recommend these three: The very easy route (13) five pitches, Nintendo 64 (17) three pitches, Gripping Yarn (16) three pitches.

If you did all three you would get 11 pitches of climbing done with 11 belay transitions. That would be a good day of multi pitch mileage. You’ll also get some experience with crowded belays and managing rope drag

The climbing at The Gib can be uninspiring. It’s very low angle slab climbing. So focus your attention on efficiency and speed because no one is going to celebrate your heroic sends. You could basically walk up some of the pitches with no hands.
