Gday OAC,

This year’s Aus Champs are happening much earlier in the year, tail-end of summer, in a beautiful section of Kozzie — set and coordinated by the ACT Rogaining crew. Don’t be put of by the “champs” in the title; everyone can enter, you don’t have to qualify. However, there is only a 24hr option. There will be ample places on course to suit a more novice team, but you’ll get more out of the event if you’ve done a rogaine or nav workshop before.

More info here:

The Australasian Champs are a 24 hour event – starting at midday on Saturday. We want everyone to count in the championships so we will not be running any other duration events. The course is set to cater for teams who want to do a shorter duration, or want to come back and sleep overnight. Please do not be put off by it being a 24 hour event.

The challenge is to score points by visiting checkpoints in the 24 hours from noon Saturday until noon Sunday. As well as competitive teams, there will be many recreational teams participating – your team can come back to the event centre (Hash House) for a sleep or food before heading out again. Catering will be provided at the Hash House during the event with soups, curries and hot drinks to keep your team on the go. Many people will enjoy the event as a fully catered weekend away in the bush.

[…]

Specific directions to the Hash House will be provided in the final instructions in late February.  The event area is all national park with a mix of grassy plains and wooded hills. A few firetrails cross the area, but the course setters think you won’t need to use them! The altitude of the course ranges from 1230m to 1600m and most of the area is nicely undulating with a few steep pinches to keep you on your toes.

The course will be set by the very experienced team of Julie Quinn and David Baldwin who have set World, Australian and a number of recent ACT championship courses and won multiple titles at World and Australian championships. There will be excellent navigational challenges in mostly open eucalypt forest and grassy plains with some limestone karst. The course will provide enjoyable and accessible terrain for teams of all levels of fitness and experience. Don’t miss this chance to experience a beautiful area!”

When you sign up, let us know what your team pace and preferences are. Do you want to go easy and practice your nav before coming back to a hearty meal and sleep, or are you going for the title and bush bashing all night? Early bird entries close February 15, so we’ll aim to have most teams organised by then. We’ll sort out gear,  accommodation/camping, and carpooling closer to the event.

Let’s get lost,

Salome and Tom H.
