skills workshop
Good day adventurers,
Do you consider yourself ‘directionally challenged’? Do you pull out google maps to get to the local pub? Maybe you’re not fond of GPS at all and are itching to break free from the confines of the beaten track. Whether you have plans to bushbash your way to an obscure canyon or cliff, or you just want a little more confidence wandering from the Ledge Climbing Gym to the Forest Lodge Hotel — this skills session is for you!
Please indicate your experience when you sign up. Empty bookings are more likely to be waitlisted (this is a good head’s up for newcomers in general — introduce yourself to the leader).
Our chosen “classroom” will likely be the very local and gentle, Western Sydney Parklands: https://nswrogaining.org/AboutEvents/Events/19MI/19MI.htm
We’ll meet at Lizard Log, 10am (plenty time for a lazy coffee), talk theory and map reading for 60-90minutes, then go through some exercises using the map for this event and its corresponding GPS points in the MapRun6 app (more info on that app here: https://nswrogaining.org/map-run/). We should be 4-6 hours.
SYLLABUS
We will cover:
- Map markings: Scale, gridlines: eastings/northings, legends, topography lines and how to derive meaning from them
- The parts of your compass, magnetic north, and the basics of getting and using a bearing
- Judging pace, distance and timing e.g. Naismith’s rule.
We may cover, if there’s interest and time: handrails and aiming off
We will likely not cover: triangulation, competition strategies, training/packing/fueling for endurance events, GPS devices
GEAR
You may get wet. It might be chilly.
Dress appropriately (layers, closed walking shoes, rain jacket).
Bring water and snacks.
Bring a compass if you have one, but we’ll also have ours and a few from the club.
Maybe a means for notetaking if you are so inclined.
See you at the lizard,
Sam
