What is rogaining?
“A fun team sport, navigating using map, compass and clues to visit as many checkpoints (controls) as possible within the time limit. It’s a “choose your own adventure” experience in outdoor environments where teams explore the course for as much or as little of the allocated time as they like.
Our sport is for all ages and fitness levels, from families walking with small children through to bushwalkers and runners. Rogaining encourages the development of strategy and navigational skills, fitness, and the ability to work in a team.
Further information can be found on our Novice Info Pages.“
The annual Paddy Pallin Rogaine is itself a longstanding, 60+ year, tradition. There’s often door prizes in addition to regular trophies, and a hot meal is included in your fee. It’s easily the most popular “bush” event of the year (the city based ones tend to get crowded), and often very friendly towards newcomers. For navigation, it’s really best learnt through practice, and these events are a great way to do so safely. In fact this year has a special feature:
- Personal assistance for novices, including a first-ever, “rogainers calibration zone”.

If you aren’t familiar with Belanglo State Forest, its where we’re doing the Mushroom Foraging, and there’s been many other rogaines there. It’s got a lot of cool hidden gems… along with some darker stuff if you do some digging. We’ll camp beforehand and can give you some tips. Let us know in the signup if you’d like help finding teammates — if so, include pace and preferences– and whether you’ll camp with us.
Yours meandering,
salome and Susan
