All Day
climbing
It’s a brilliant sunny day with a gentle breeze rustling your clothes. Pods of dolphins jump between the waves many meters below you! Whales can be seen off in the distance and seals flap their flippers as they play on the ocean’s surface. Like to take in a view like this…hanging from a rope half way down a monumental cliff? Well this is the trip for you! Point Perpendicular is the most spectacular climb I have done so far and can’t wait to relive it again! To add to the experience we will be camping at the picturesque Honeymoon Bay located nearby to the climbing area.
Where: Point Perpendicular and Honeymoon Bay, Beecroft Peninsula. https://goo.gl/maps/FUs3EBUk79JUtrmQA
When: Dec Sat 12- Sun 13th (optional Friday 11th)
Experience: This is not for the faint hearted with full cliff exposure, requiring intermediate climbing skills (and rope skills a bonus). Rock Skills 1 and Abseil Skills 1 required. Please indicate your experience when signing up including what grade you are comfortable climbing and how many outdoor climbing trips you have been on.
Itinerary: We plan to have a full day of climbing on Saturday, then in the late afternoon setup camp at Honeymoon Bay for our overnight stay. Starting again in the morning we have another day of climbing Sunday and returning to Sydney later in the afternoon. Fabio and myself will be heading down approx 9am on Friday to ensure we get a camping spot at Honeymoon Bay (it’s a popular spot with allocated spaces and no booking!). Participants are welcome to join for this optional Friday overnight camp – please indicate if you would like to take this option. Please be aware however that Friday night campers are required to pay and register their stay in person at the visitor centre before 6pm or else they will not be able to access the area which is security regulated (it is a Defence Base). This will rule out camping on Friday for those not able to arrive earlier than 6pm. 🙁 Once you have been registered you are able to travel in and out of the camping area after this time (other areas are restricted).
Getting There: There is no public transport therefore car access is required and car must be registered at the entrance.
Facilities: There are limited facilities in the area, with only toilets and bins available. This requires you to bring your own water and food. This includes breakfast, lunch and dinner for the days you are staying. If needed there are supermarkets in Nowra on the way, and a small corner shop/fish and chip shop in nearby Currarong. Camp fires are prohibited unfortunately, however its a cosy spot and the Bay is perfect for a dip after a long day of climbing!
Cost: Camping is $5-10 per night, depending on number attending camping. Plus shared petrol costs for your driver.
Required Gear: Climbing shoes must be provided by the participant. Food, water, warm clothing, swimmers, sun protection, head torch. Please indicate if you require camping or other climbing gear as follows.
-Tent
-Mattress
-Sleeping Bag
-Cooking stove (Trangia)
-Headtorch
-Harness
-PAS and Biner
-Belay Device
-Helmet
