Hi all,
On the 21 and 22 of March, Arthur and I will be heading out to Kanangra for a couple of canyons. Kanangra is a bit further from Sydney than you may be used to (3.5 hours), but the unique vertical and aquatic canyons here make it worthwhile (if you have the skills).
A photo from each of my three visits to Kanangra Main.
Kanangra Main is possibly the most frequented canyon in the area, and one of the best. It has 17 abseils of up to 60m, some passing through fast-flowing water. It starts by descending alongside a 150m waterfall, stopping at ledges along the way. It ends in a long creek walk/scramble followed by a treacherous 500m ascent, aptly named Manslaughter Ridge. We’ll need a fit and efficient party to get it done in under 10 hours.
Arabanoo is a much less popular canyon in the area, and will be a bit exploratory. It is shorter (only 6 abseils, up to 50m), and drier (probably no wetsuits unless you get cold easily, there will likely be some short swims). It is less spectacular than Kanangra Main, but it should still be a fun adventure. I’m expecting under 8 hours for this one.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
⁃ Vertical self-rescue skills, similar to what’s outlined in this course.
⁃ SRT rigging skills, similar to what’s outlined in this course. Most, if not all, people will have to rig some drops.
⁃ Good fitness – these canyons will be long days with lots of uphill walking in challenging Kanangra terrain. You’ll also likely be carrying a heavy ~60m rope.
⁃ VERY comfortable with heights.
⁃ Name your favourite abseil in the signup to show that you’ve read this far.
⁃ A good few other canyons.
Please list other canyons you’ve done in your signup.
THE PLAN:
⁃ We’ll meet at the Boyd River Campground on the Friday night (20 of March). Unless you’re very experienced and have all your own gear (I’ll know who you are), I’m going to ban driving up on the Saturday morning because I don’t want anyone to be late or tired, and I want to organise gear and plans the night before.
⁃ We’ll leave camp by 8 am on Saturday, the 21/3. It’s a short drive to the start of the Kanangra Main walk-in. We’ll then do the canyon and head back to camp afterwards.
⁃ On Sunday, the 22 of March, we’ll again leave camp by 8am, and head out to do Arabanoo, also a short drive from the campsite. Hopefully, we’ll be back to the cars a bit before 4 pm, in time for the long drive home.
GEAR:
You will need camping and canyoning gear, as well as food for both days. Let me know what gear you need from the club in the ‘Gear I Need’ box. Note that good whistles will be important for this trip.
NOTE: This trip is far enough in the future that people’s skills and experience may change significantly in the lead up. In light of this fact, I may not accept any or all participants until a couple of weeks out.
Hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Zen & Arthur
