So you’ve been to the climbing gym.
You’ve pulled on colourful plastic holds, debated whether the purple one was actually a V3, and maybe told your friends you’re “getting into climbing.” But deep down you know the truth: real rock is calling.

Luckily for you, we’re running Rock Skills 1 at Alfreds Point on Sunday, 19 April 2026.

This course is designed for people who want to learn the fundamentals of outdoor climbing in a safe and supportive environment. We’ll cover the core skills needed to climb outside, including building anchors, setting up top ropes, belaying, and general crag safety. By the end of the day, you’ll have the skills required to participate in most UTSOAC climbing trips.

Expect a full day outside learning, practising systems, asking questions, and climbing some routes at the friendly sandstone crag at Alfreds Point.

What you’ll learn

• Cliff safety
• Equipment
• Pre-climb buddy checks
• Tying into a rope
• Communications/calls
• Top-rope belaying
• Basic rock climbs on top rope
