rogaining
Hello Adventurers,
The rogaine championships are nearly upon us, and I’m gearing up for 24 hours of crashing through the bush hunting for controls.
How does one prepare for a full day of moving non-stop (especially after a few months of intermittent coop-up-edness)? Well, realistically, by doing it consistently over the course of years. That being said, it’s good to test yourself along that journey, which is what we’ll do for this event.
*Those regularly participating in the navigation activities get first priority, not providing any requested info is automatic rejection of booking.
The longest distance on the MapRunF leaderboard says 32km. At a pace of 5:45min/km, they were running that over 3 hours 3min.
We’re not running a marathon, we’re ruling out tweakiness of recent injuries (ahem, me and James), breaking in or testing footwear, and remembering how klutzy, grumpy, and forgetful we get when we’re tired and hungry. So…
We’re going to get every single control on the Wanda Shire 2017 Minigaine map in Sutherland. Exciting, as that’s not a thing I’ve done in event before! Then, we’re getting them again in reverse, then forwards once more, while playing Trivial Pursuit cards, for a total of 96km over 24 hours. Rain or shine.
Yes, this is suffering for the sake of suffering. Some caveats:
*Super easy terrain, not diving into gullies and out again
*Starting around sundown, so we’re fresh for nighttime nav
*Other than time lost, I have no qualms about suburban rest-stops. Caltex can serve as an improvised All-Night Cafe.
*It’s in civilisation, so bail whenever you want. Hell, if you’re injured, you’ll bail because I command it. I may have to command myself to bail.
* There’s two whole weeks to recover before event day.
