Huge welcome to our new cohort of adventurers- can’t wait to see you out in the wild.
For the uninitiated, “Rogaining is an orienteering sport of long distance cross-country navigation, involving both route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types. In a rogaine, teams of 2–5 people choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit with the intent of maximizing their score.”
The next event is in Yengo National Park (<– link to event entry, fees, and description). There will be an 8 hour category for those who just want to try this out and/or have a more relaxed time, or a 24hr for the veterans and super keen.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, if you want directions to novice resources, or if you’re on the fence about giving this a go and think an enthusiastic, dorky trip leader can talk you into it.

“There is something for everyone on the course: with a good trail network, open valleys and the lowest and more open ridges being close to the HH, families and novices will have plenty to play with whilst more competitive rogainers will be able to challenge themselves finding ways over and across as many hills as possible.
Some expansive views can be had for the more energetic from the higher parts of the course and the many rocky outcrops provide lookouts for the others.
The course setters have found Aboriginal sharpening grooves at two sites as well as a cave with hand stencils.
Wildlife includes the usual lyrebirds, black cockatoos, crimson rosellas, wallabies and kangaroos but imposing wallaroos, wombats, spotted pardalottes, bush turkeys and many more have also been seen.”
You will need (bold indicates mandated by AUS rogaining, so you’d get a point penalty if you’re audited):
- 2L water per day
- Suitable footwear (hiking boots, trainers, trail runners, depending on your preference)
- Rain coat
- Snake bandage
- Thermal blanket
- Mozzie spray
- Sun cream
- Clothing suitable for bushbashing
- Food, high sugar content preferable, at least one meal will be catered by the event
- Money for the fee
- Your experience with hiking, trail running, orienteering, or rogaining
- Which event you’d like to do and if you want to be placed with a particular team-mate
- A team name suggestion- the punnier the better!
