UTSOAC Bikepacks! I’m doing a reccie on 15-16 Aug for a trip running later in the year and opening it up to the Club.

The route reverses the last third of Attack of the Buns (Attack of The Buns, Australia – BIKEPACKING.com), cycling from Bundanoon to Bomaderry (Southern Highlands). Both have train stations which means we don’t have to muck around with car shuffles, roof racks and trailers. The actual route is here: https://maps.ozultimate.com/?id=1774129850641. Note that there is no support vehicle – we take everything we need with us on the bikes!

Trip fun facts:

  • Overall distance is 100km, making it two very comfortable days
  • Starting elevation is 650m above the finish 🙂
  • Route is on quiet roads and fire trails
  • The Meryla Pass downhill leg has similar vertical descent to the runs at Thredbo, but not technical/scary at all.
  • The ride sucks in summer, so we’re doing it in winter

This is a great introductory bikepacking trip, but you need cycling experience. Have a think about the following to self-select:

You need:

  • Access to a bike (gravel bike to mountain bike)
  • A way of sensibly carrying your gear (think racks, not backpacks)
  • To be comfortable being on a bike for most of the day, including long uphills and fire trails (it’s okay if you have to get off and push your bike up hill).
  • A good level of fitness (a good guide is if you can climb the fire stairs in UTS Building 1 without stopping)
  • To know how to repair a tyre

When booking, please include some notes about your cycling experience, what cycle touring/bike packing you’ve done, a bit about the gear you’d bring and what tools you need to fix a puncture.

Bon velo!
