canyoning

Hi all,

On Saturday, the 26th of April, Ollie and I will be heading out to a Blue Mountains classic – Butterbox Canyon (aka Mt Hay Canyon). Featuring epic slot, some cool abseils, and a rock-climbing exit, it’ll be a fun day out.

WHO IS THIS FOR?
This is not a beginner trip. I would say it lies on the easier side of intermediate. To sign up, you must:
– Have good physical fitness. There’s a bit of an arduous walk out, and it’ll be a longish day.
– Be comfortable with heights and cold water. A lot of the exit is quite exposed, and this trip will be later in the season when it might start getting a little chilly.
– AS1 and at least a couple of other canyons/abseiling trips. If you haven’t done any canyons but have other roped experience, e.g. you’re a climber, sign up and note that down; we may make exceptions.

List your experience in the signup notes – sell yourself!

THE PLAN
– We’ll meet at the car park at 8:30 am on the morning of Saturday the 26th of April. Here, we’ll hand out gear and hope to be out on the track by 9 am.
– We’ll complete the canyon according to the track notes. I’d expect to take around 8hrs.
– Note that the entry fire trail is a little sketchy. From memory, a 2WD with good clearance should be able to make it, but don’t take your flashy sports car. Leave plenty of time to drive through this section.

GEAR YOU NEED
– Canyoning equipment (pack, wetsuit, helmet, harness, PAS, descender, dry bag, etc.). Don’t worry about the ‘Gear I Need’ section when signing up, I’ll send out a spreadsheet to organise this closer to the date.
– Water (2+L)
– Lunch + Snacks
– A way to tie long hair back
– Closed, grippy shoes that can get wet and scuffed and aren’t waterproof
– Dry clothes for the walk out (optional)
– It’s always a good idea to bring a rain jacket and a head torch when canyoning

Hope to see you out there!

Cheers,
Zen & Ollie
