Every year NSW rogaining runs a "Socialgaine", a low-key and urban version of the usual bushbashing navigation comp that incorporates fun shenangians and great food. It's also a low pressure way to push your endurance and practice using a map and compass.
This year's Socialgaine has a never before attempted novelty — ferries to and from Cockatoo Island during the event! It's easy to forget we live next to one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. We rarely explore our own backyard, and rogaine courses often lead you to hidden gems we'd never run into otherwise. As a bonus, there's TWO navigation competitions that weekend: Orienteering on Saturday and Rogaining on Sunday. Pick whichever of these you want to do, or both!
We’re making Navfest a full weekend on Cockatoo Island:
- Take the ferry in and camp the Friday night.
- Do the orienteering event on the island the Saturday morning.
- Attend the on island movie showing that evening. Do a big group Camp Cooking Comp.
- Compete in the ferrygaine on the Sunday, then head back to Mainland Sydney.
Open to other ideas!
We have pre-booked 4x campsites on the island for Saturday night, with up to 4 people per campsite (we can add more slots). The club has graciously paid for half, and we’ll work out the other costs closer to the date. You’ll have to book Friday camping yourself if you’re interested.
